Riddle me this! Who's up for a riddle?

Riddle me this! Mystery authors love riddles. What better way to keep the mind young and vibrant? Of course, these can drive a person crazy or keep them up at night. Riddles bait and tug, but they can also render elation when solved. With this in mind, I’m trying my hand at riddles. It’s time to stretch the writing chops so to speak and leave one for you to ponder.

As a side note, I can’t help thinking about riddles without hearing the Joker in Batman saying, “Riddle me this!”

But before I do, let’s touch on some famous writers that love riddles. How about William Shakespeare? He used riddles in multiple works, including Hamlet.

What is he that builds stronger than either the mason, the shipwright, or the carpenter? Click here for the answer.

In addition to Shakespeare, the brilliant-minded Jane Austen wrote her own fair share of riddles/charades. Try this one on for size:

When my first is a task to a young girl of spirit,
And my second confines her to finish the piece,
How hard is her fate! but how great is her merit
If by taking my whole she effects her release!

Last, but certainly not least, let us not forget Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his moody, obsessive, compulsive Sherlock Holmes. Just watch the movies if you’re short on time. Needless to say, I spent my youth reading his books and working feverishly to solve them prior to finishing. Ah, those were the days.

Anyway, I digress. Riddles…

So without further ado, riddle me this:

Emerging from the East, I am a magical sacrament. Frothing to and fro, I stole across the continents.

Intoxicating is my nature; though my life is bittersweet. I creep and lurk in special places because I’m revolting in too much cold or heat.

And at the crux of life, my life source is squashed and bound. Barely to be seen again while I reside underground.

What am I?

Happy riddling, my friends. I’ll post the answer and maybe even post the name of the first person who correctly answers in my next post. Until next time…

Happy solving,

K.D.
