My Journey as a Mystery Author: Reflections with K.D. Upton

This week’s episode of Books & Tea with KD felt deeply personal. I sat down with my favorite beverage (tea, of course!) and reflected on my path as a mystery author. It’s been a journey full of ups and downs—much like the stories I write.

In this episode, I share how my love for mysteries began. Growing up, I was the kid glued to detective shows and flipping through every Agatha Christie book I could find (don’t forget Sir Arthur Conan Doyle!). But my stories didn’t start there. Writing became a way for me to process life’s uncertainties and explore the “whys” behind human behavior. It became an outlet for my joy, grief… all the emotions. Reading opened up a world of characters that became my friends. Imaginary? Yes, but none the less true.

I also talk about the challenges I’ve faced along the way. From always being the new kids on the block to battling chronic illness, it hasn’t always been easy. But every struggle has taught me something. For instance, my health journey helped me see the world differently. That perspective often shows up in my books—especially in how I develop characters and plot twists.

This episode is more than just a behind-the-scenes look at my life. It’s also a conversation about why I think mysteries matter. They make us question motives and explore the unexpected. They also remind us that, no matter how dark the situation, there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel.

If you’re curious about what inspires my stories or want to learn how I bring my characters to life, this episode is for you. Grab a cozy drink, hit play, and let’s chat about what it means to turn life’s mysteries into art.
